29 Jun Sound Scene XII at Hirshhorn

@queerappalachia, @jrbrubaker & @gradientprojects installed at @hirshhorn this weekend as part of @sound.scene

from @queerappalachia —

I have a piece of art showing at The @smithsonian’s @hirshhorn opening this weekend. I am grateful to have the platform to talk about the opioid crises & Appalachian politics, especially where they intersect. We live in a time of digital news cycles & shorthand dog whistles like “Trump Country” that help keep #JDVance on the NYT bestseller list. It used to be every major media outlet had a “hot take” on Appalachia. Now, it feels like EVERYONE does. That’s why it’s important for Appalachians to make art & tell their own stories. On a personal note, opioid addiction & my body’s unique response to processing the Rx’s, Opioid Neurotoxicity has been the largest obstacles I have navigated in my life. Opioids help with my pain but I become untethered to reality. I live with a chronic debilitating painful auto immune disorder, pain management will be a huge part of my life the rest of my life. Trying to understand the treatment options that are available to me for pain management has meant that Opioid Neurotoxicity has been a predominate part of my life for the past decade . My relationship to opioids / how my body processes them has impacted every relationship in my life. Being able to make things has been the most healing & positive for me. From public art to homespun handmade work, making things helps me be present & in the moment. As an Artist that almost lost their life to opioids I support the work of @sacklerpain. PAIN has worked tirelessly to hold the Sackler family accountable for their role in the opioid epidemic as owners of #PurduePharmaceuticals. In the June @vanityfair interview with #DavidSackler, David said “the family’s philanthropy is being rejected”. ONLY @ prestigious cultural institutions. What David is really saying is no one will take our money that we want to give it to. The Sackler’s have never explored #opioidreperations. I get it, wings of international museums named after you is sexier than building back the communities that you profited from their literal #deathtoll.

Last night an amazing group of folks came together to help me make pills from crushed Appalachian coal. We made thousands of them, each representing a person who’s died from opioid overdose in coal country.
These will form part of collaborative work with @queerappalachia as part @sound.scene – June 29-30 at @hirshhorn

Studio view from aTE member John Ryan Brubaker @jrbrubaker In Thomas, West Virginia.

Brubaker has for the past 7 years, split his time between Thomas, West Virginia US and Brussels, Belgium. Thomas, an ex-coal mining town of approximately 500 people informs much of his recent practice.

As a photographer he is interested in space and movement, especially across political and geographical boundaries. A recent collaborative piece of work involved rocks from the mountains in Morrocco being transplanted to West Virginia in exchange for the recitation of a text into a canyon.

John Ryan says: ‘In particular, I am interested in the visual effects of the urban environment in which most of the planet lives. This includes architecture and public space, as well as passageways and transit lines, advertising, public art, cultural remnants and the emerging visual landscape of digital culture.

My work is often based on explorations of unknown spaces, and the aimless wander has become an increasingly important part of my practice. The experience of being off the map or otherwise guided by one’s immediate environment itself, has been essential in my most recent projects.

Found Abstraction No. 16
…
In December 2018 Tumblr became the latest major social media platform to introduce a zero tolerance policy towards ‘adult content’. Other major networks – Facebook, Instagram, etc. – have long removed content considered ‘adult’ despite it not respresenting sexual contact or pornographic material. This has included female (but not male) nipples, breastfeeding and same-sex couples kissing. The decision by Tumblr to remove these images and accompanying threads has led to the loss of long-established resources for communities that have used this platform to exchange imagery and stories about safe, consensual, sex-positive practices and lifestyles. It has also re-inforced the unbalanced treatment of physical bodies based on gender stereotypes and assumptions.

As digital media becomes the core platform for social communication our cultural expression is being controlled by unaccountable media conglomerates. They are dictating what we are able to see and discuss, shaping our concepts of what is considered dirty, shameful or unacceptable in society.

The works in this series are enlarged crops of images found on a variety of digital platforms. The original photographs include nude human bodies, kissing consensual adults and breast-feeding mothers, but no sexual activity of any kind.
